Appointment Of Consultants

The Medical Specialist Group's Contract with the States of Guernsey requires that any new Consultant employed by the Group is appointed through a procedure which is identical to that used in making NHS Consultant appointments. This includes the requirement that all new Consultants are fully accredited and on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register. Interview panel members include an independent external assessor from the relevant specialty's Royal College as well as a lay member of the States of Guernsey Health and Social Services Department.

Before any Consultant commences work, the Medical Specialist Group must apply to the Health and Social Services Department for permission to practise in the Bailiwick and use the facilities at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. This also applies to locum specialists. Extensive documentation is obtained regarding all doctors and thorough checks are carried out prior to these permissions being granted.

There is a mandatory requirement by the Royal Colleges that all Consultants prove they are keeping up to date in their speciality through regular participation in courses, seminars and meetings, including the monitoring and auditing of their own work.

To limit professional and clinical isolation, many of our Consultants have links with major UK Teaching Hospitals and regularly visit these centres to carry out clinical procedures and participate in audit meetings.
