Mr Hugh Bacon is one of three Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons working at the Medical Specialist Group.

He was born in England, training as a doctor at Cambridge University and St Thomas' Hospital. He worked as a junior doctor in posts in general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics and neuro-surgery before beginning his ophthalmic career in Leeds in 1979. His ophthalmic career then proceeded via the Western Ophthalmic Hospital in London, the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading and the West of England Eye Infirmary in Exeter before arriving in Guernsey as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in 1989.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and also the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He is a member of the South Western Ophthalmological Society, the Oxford Congress, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the European Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

He works as a general Ophthalmic Surgeon but has special interest in Diabetic retinopathy and the treatment of ophthalmic conditions in children. He maintains a close working relationship with the Ophthalmic Surgeons in Southampton and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London leading to a personalised referral service for tertiary referrals. He maintains close contact with the Opticians in the Island and also with the Guernsey Blind Association.

He is married with four children and has a brother, sister and brother-in-law who are all Ophthalmic surgeons in the United Kingdom.
