Dr Jocelyn Briggs FRCP

Consultant Physician/Geriatrician
GMC number - 2649557

Dr Jocelyn Briggs was raised in Guernsey, living with her family in the Ville au Roi and attending Blanchelande College and in later years, Elizabeth College for her A-level work.

In 1974, she started training at the Royal London Hospital Medical School. In 1977 she achieved a BSc in psychology and completed her training as a doctor in 1980. Thereafter she gained wide experience in many hospitals throughout England and worked in the Casualty Department at Jersey General Hospital for six months. In 1985 she chose to pursue a career in the care of the elderly and in 1989 received dual accreditation in geriatrics and general medicine having completed the West Midlands training programme. In 1989 she was appointed a consultant in general medicine with a special interest in care of the elderly at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. She was entered on the specialist register as a general physician and a geriatrician at its inception in 1993 and in 1994 she became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

While Dr Briggs continued to pursue an interest in endoscopy work, she became increasingly involved in management issues as a champion of the interests of older people. In 1992 she was appointed lead clinician for services for older people and in 1996 also became lead clinician for acute medicine.

During this period she kept in close contact with her family in Guernsey and did short term locum work for both the Medical Specialist Group and the Geriatric Department at the King Edward VII Hospital.

In September 2002 she was appointed to one of two new posts of general physician with a special interest in elderly care based at the Medical Specialist Group and together with her new colleague she will be closely involved with the developments of future plans for the provision of services for the elderly across the island.

She has moved from the mainland together with her husband who is a pharmacist and her three young children.
