- General Surgery -
General Surgery is a broad ranging specialty that incorporates a number of complex
subspecialty surgical disciplines, including the management of breast and bowel
cancer, vascular disease, and liver and gall bladder problems.
The Medical Specialist Group has four General Surgeons each of whom has special
skills, training and experience in a particular sub-specialty over and above
their general training. All are skilled in modern non-invasive Laparoscopic
surgical techniques and have well established mainland links that include clinic
and operating sessions in major UK Teaching Hospitals.
The General Surgeons provide a 24 hour on-call emergency service for the Hospital
on a rotating basis and also provide specialist back-up for each other according
to their subspecialty interests.

Out-Patient Care
Non-emergency patients requiring the attention of a General Surgeon are referred
by their General Practitioners to clinics at Alexandra House.
Whilst many patients will have been referred to a particular Consultant, the
increasingly sub-specialist nature of the discipline means that it is often more
appropriate for a patient to see a Consultant with a particular interest in their
type of medical problem. As such, inter-departmental referrals of patients within
the Department occur frequently.
Specialist Clinics and Investigations
a) Breast Clinic
Mr Kairsingh and the locum Breast Surgeon conduct regular Multidisciplinary Breast Clinics at the
Princess Elizabeth Hospital and these provide rapid access to specialist assessment,
advice and treatment as per UK guidelines. The Guernsey Breast Screening Service and
Clinics are highly regarded both locally and in the UK.
b) Endoscopies
Mr Van den Bossche has dedicated Endoscopy sessions at
the PEH and many patients will be referred directly to these procedural clinics by
their General Practitioners. Procedures performed include diagnostic
oesophago-gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
c) Minor Surgery
All of the General Surgeons accept referrals for minor surgery ie. superficial lumps
and bumps, and these lesions are usually removed under local anaesthetic through
the Day Procedures Unit at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.
Inpatient Care and Emergencies
The General Surgeons provide emergency surgical cover for the Hospital and General
Practitioners 24 hours a day on a rotating on-call basis.
In-patients are usually cared for on Ozanne Ward at the PEH and in-patient care
is shared between the Consultants. This ensures that each Consultant knows every
general surgical patient in the hospital. In addition to the regular morning ward
rounds by the Consultant on-call, immediate post-operative surgical patients will
usually been seen on the day following their surgery by the Consultant who
performed their operation. There is also a weekly Grand Round attended by all
of the Consultants.
Services for Private Patients:
All of the above services are provided for both Contract and Private Patients.
In addition, patients referred Privately will be:
A) seen out of normal clinic hours, as "add-ons" both before and after normal
Clinic Sessions;
B) seen by the Consultant of their (or their GP's) choice;
B) cared for Privately as In-patients on Victoria Ward.
