In-Patient Care
The Physicians share the care of approximately 2000 patients who are admitted
each year as emergencies to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. Cover is provided
through on on-call rota and includes the management of such conditions as myocardial
infarction (heart attacks), stroke, heart failure, pneumonia and other serious
infections, gastrointestinal bleeding and poisoning.
Out-Patient Care
Approximately 7000 patients are seen annually in the medical clinics at Alexandra
House.
The majority of these patients are referred directly by their General Practitioners
for advice on the diagnosis and management of complex medical conditions. Patients
are also seen as "follow-ups" after discharge from hospital following an acute
medical admission.
The complex and specialist nature of modern medical care means that some
patients with rare or more complex medical problems will need assessment
and treatment by a mainland Consultant. Some UK Consultants visit Guernsey
to see patients with less urgent problems, but in most cases patients will
be referred to a specialist medical center in England.
Specialist Investigations
The management of complex medical conditions often requires extensive specialist
investigations, the majority of which can be performed in Guernsey by the local
Consultants.
These investigations include Endoscopies, Bronchoscopies, Lung Function Tests,
and Exercise ECG's ("Stress Tests") to name a few.
A few investigations, such as MRI Scanning, are not available in Guernsey and
require a visit to Jersey or a specialist mainland centre.
Oncology Services
New staff and equipment at the Medical Specialist Group and Princess Elizabeth
Hospital, enables most patients with cancer to be treated and cared for locally
(with the exception of those patients requiring Radiotherapy).
Dr Gomes is a Cancer Specialist (Oncologist) as well as a general physician and
his addition to the medical unit means that most forms of chemotherapy and
specialist cancer treatment can be provided locally either through Bulstrode House
or as an inpatient at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital or occasionally even at home
with the support of specially trained Community Nurses. He has close links with
Cancer Specialists in the UK, a number of whom make regular visits to Guernsey to
review patients and advise on treatment.
Services for Private Patients:
All of the above services are provided for both Contract and Private Patients.
In addition patients referred Privately will be:
A) seen out of normal clinic hours, as "add-ons" both before and after normal
Clinic Sessions;
B) seen by the Consultant of their (or their GP's) choice;
C) cared for Privately as In-patients on Victoria Ward;
