- Department of Paediatrics and Child Health -
The Department of Paediatrics is devoted to the care and well-being of all children
from birth through adolescence to ensure optimal health, growth and development.
Local paediatric care has undergone considerable developments over the
last few years. Our present pro-active team of three paediatricians is
closely integrated with the Health and Social Services Department through the secondary health care
contract, and is forging common links with acute and community paediatric services.
Our ultimate aims are to provide a fully integrated and seamless child health
service working efficiently to meet the health needs of all local children and
adolescents.

Neonatology
We have developed an advanced unit capable of providing safe management
of our ill new-born, both pre-term and term. This has been necessary both
as a consequence of our potential isolation due to adverse weather,
as well as a frequent lack of available intensive
care cots in the UK. It is, however, still necessary sometimes to transfer
babies to England - usually Southampton - for surgical/cardiological
disorders and long term ventilation/intensive care requirements.
Emergencies
Occasional urgent out-patient referrals are seen at Mill House, but all
other emergencies are seen and assessed on Frossard Ward, Princess
Elizabeth Hospital, where 24 hour hospital cover is provided by the
consultants on a rotational basis.
Hospital in-patients
A Consultant ward round is performed every morning.
Referrals
- General Paediatric referrals are distributed evenly among the three
consultants to minimise waiting times.
- Patients with disorders specific to a Consultant's special interest
will be seen directly by that Consultant.
- Private referrals will be seen personally by the named Consultant.
- UK referrals: Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide all care locally
and referral to the UK or Jersey is sometimes necessary either to complete the required
investigations, eg MRI scans, EEG, etc, or seek the expertise of a tertiary centre.
In view of the complex nature of most childhood disorders and their effect on
general growth, health, development and education, it is highly recommended that
all off-island referrals are directed by a Paediatrician to ensure appropriate
placement and integrated involvement of local services. Our department has
forged strong links with many units in the UK to ensure such management is
optimised.
