Dr Dean Patterson joined the Medical Specialist Group in April 2006 as a consultant physician specialising in cardiovascular medicine.

A South African, he studied at the University of Pretoria, graduating in Medical Sciences and Surgery in 1992. He then moved to England in 1995 to fulfil the position of Senior House Officer in General Medicine at Cheltenham General Hospital where he obtained his membership of the Royal College of Physicians.

In 1997 Dr Patterson became the Specialist Registrar in General Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. Subsequently he became the Research Fellow & Cardiology Registrar at the Hypertension Research Unit and Coronary care unit at Dundee University.

In 2003 he went on to become the Clinical Lecturer in Cardiovascular Medicine & Honorary Specialist Registrar in General Medicine at the Tayside University Hospital, Dundee. This role included a training post in vascular medicine and the assessment of acute vascular referrals. At this time he was also involved in teaching activities such as a Regional Primary Care workshop in cardiovascular disease.

His involvement and teaching activities have been followed by a number of publications within his specialist field, such as an MD in 'Modulating Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Man'.

In his current role, Dr Patterson hopes to develop a specialist outpatient service for patients who have suffered a heart attack.

He will also be forging an off island link with Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in London to enable him to set up and develop the new cardiovascular service on the island.
