Information For Private Patients

In addition to their commitments to Contract/Public patients, Consultants at the Medical Specialist Group see large numbers of Private Patients each year, referred directly through their General Practitioners.

Consultants at the Medical Specialist Group have chosen to live and practice in Guernsey largely as a consequence of its unique and special medical service and structure. The majority have left busy Private Practices and NHS Teaching Hospital posts in the UK in preference for the Consultant-only model of health care that has evolved in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. This health care model facilitates a far more personalised service with an enhanced level of care and satisfaction for both the patient and the clinician.

Medical facilities in Guernsey are of an extremely high standard and are constantly being reviewed and upgraded in partnership with the Board of Health. The vast majority of routine surgical and investigative procedures can now be performed locally and regular outcome audits are performed.

New Consultants with additional special skills are constantly being employed by the Medical Specialist Group to meet the needs of the local population and only the most complex and major medical problems now require the attention of mainland specialists.

Patients with Private Health Insurance who may previously have chosen to go to London for specialist advice and treatment can be assured of a level of care and advice in Guernsey that is the equal of any they would find on the mainland (and in many cases superior). Many of the local Guernsey Consultants continue to visit and work in established mainland Teaching Hospitals to ensure not only their own continuing professional development, but to advise and assist NHS Consultants with the management of their patients as well.

The Medical Specialist Group welcomes Private Patients who will be provided with the same high quality service offered Contract patients, with the addition that they will be;

a) seen by the Consultant of their (or their GP's) choice;
b) seen out of normal clinic hours if they so choose;
c) cared for Privately as In-patients on Victoria Ward at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.
