- Department of Urology -

The specialist Urological service in Guernsey commenced fifteen years ago, becoming part of the Medical Specialist Group when this came into existence in January 1992. In common with many specialties, Urology requires a team approach to care and this is steadily being adopted and introduced in Guernsey.

The British Association of Urological Surgeons advises that there should be one consultant per 80,000 population, but this is rarely achieved in the UK itself and is considered a minimum requirement (and is well below the European average).

Guernsey is most fortunate to have a dedicated Urologist (Mr Allen) and it is likely that the Bailiwick will continue to have a single Consultant urologist as part of a multidisciplinary team in the future. Close links with specialist regional centers in the UK already exist and Mr Allen visits and works in England on a regular basis to ensure the high quality local service is maintained.

As much specialist Urology is on children, Mr Allen is also the dedicated Paediatric Surgeon on the island and has additional specialist training in this field.

Inpatient Care

Adult patients requiring surgery are admitted to Ozanne Ward at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. Children under 16 years old are cared for on Frossard Ward.
Private patients are usually admitted to Victoria wing unless they are undergoing special procedures such as transurethral surgery.
Patients requiring more major surgery often require close monitoring and nursing attention and may therefore spend their first postoperative night on Intensive Care.

Services for Private Patients:

All of the above services are provided for both Contract and Private Patients.

In addition patients referred Privately will be:

A) seen out of normal clinic hours, as "add-ons" both before and after normal Clinic Sessions;
B) cared for Privately as In-patients on Victoria Ward.
