Dr Gary Yarwood has been a Consultant Anaesthetist and Director of Intensive Care at the Medical Specialist Group since 1996.

He was born in Leicestershire and educated at Rawlins School, Quorn, before training as an undergraduate at the The Medical College of St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, where he qualified as a Doctor in 1985.

Following a period working on a High Dependency Unit in London, he decided to pursue a career in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, and trained at a number of leading teaching hospitals in London including St Bart's, University College Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital. His training included a period of Intensive Care research as a Fellow of The Intensive Care Society. He has presented work at a number of international meetings and has over 20 publications in specialist academic Journals.

Dr Yarwood came to Guernsey as a Consultant Anaesthetist in 1996, a position that included his appointment as the inaugural Director of Intensive Care at The Princess Elizabeth Hospital. He has been instrumental in the establishment of a sophisticated programme of continuous Audit of Intensive Care to monitor and improve the care offered to critically ill patients in Guernsey.

His anaesthetic interests particularly include the management of patients undergoing complex major vascular and general surgical procedures but he retains a regular involvement in all aspects of general anaesthetic work.

He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Anaesthetists, is on the Specialist Register of the GMC and is also a Member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland and The Intensive Care Society.

His major interest outside work is his young family of four children (including twins) but he remains a keen sportsman and traveler.
